This shake has the bitterness of a high-percentage dark chocolate bar. A little avocado supplies the creamy fat that carbs would normally provide, so the carbs stay very low. It is not sweet, so adjust the stevia to your preference.
Ingredients
Makes 1 serving.
- 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder (about 30 g)
- 1 ¼ cups unsweetened almond milk
- ½ ripe avocado
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 6 drops liquid stevia
- 1 pinch salt
- 5 ice cubes
Method
- Scoop the avocado into the blender and add the almond milk.
- Add the protein powder, cocoa, stevia, salt, and ice.
- Blend for 45 to 60 seconds, until no flecks of avocado show.
- Taste and add more stevia a drop at a time. Cocoa varies a lot in bitterness.

Tips
- A ripe avocado is soft when gently pressed. Underripe avocado stays slightly stringy when blended.
- Use a good unsweetened cocoa. The flavor of the whole shake depends on it.
Swaps and variations
- Use half a frozen banana in place of stevia for a sweeter shake with more carbs.
- Add a drop of peppermint extract for a mint-chocolate flavor.
