Tart cherry juice is a common choice with athletes after hard training. It also tastes good with chocolate, a pairing that works the same way a cherry cordial does. The shake lands somewhere between a smoothie and chocolate milk.
Ingredients
Makes 1 serving.
- 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder (about 30 g)
- ¾ cup tart cherry juice
- ½ cup frozen dark sweet cherries
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ cup water
- 3 ice cubes
Method
- Pour the cherry juice and water into the blender and add the protein powder and cocoa.
- Add the frozen cherries and ice.
- Blend on high for a full minute, because frozen cherries take longer to break down than banana or berries.
- Drink cold.

Tips
- Check the juice label. Tart cherry juice sold as a concentrate is much stronger and needs diluting.
- The shake is sweet from the fruit alone. Skip any added sweetener.
Swaps and variations
- Swap the water for milk if you prefer a creamier shake.
- Use frozen dark sweet cherries for a milder, sweeter version.
